India – A New Beginning for the Airline Industry

Plan your vacations ahead of the summer season in India and enjoy your tourist spots to the fullest. The Indian government issued a notice on 8 March 2022 in which the reopening of scheduled international flights was mentioned. According to the notice, the indefinitely suspended flights will be in operation from 27 March 2022.

Some other major changes were talked about after the news of the notice emerged. Travel experts, people in important positions, and such have given their opinions on the impact of this decision. The prices for flight tickets from USA to India have been very high during the pandemic months.

The new decision was welcomed readily by everyone. People had already started making plans for travel journeys to and from India. And now, the airlines are roaring to run flights in numbers similar to pre-covid times.

Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia, the Minister of Civil Aviation, on Sunday said that “Today is a very important day…All regular international flights services resumed with full capacity from today. During the last two years of the coronavirus pandemic, the international flights were being operated under the air bubble arrangements.” Furthermore, he said that big changes in airfares can be expected with an increase in demand and the number of flights to and from India.

This statement has shown promise and raised the morale of people who were still withholding from making proper vacation plans. This decision of the Indian government has come up after serious discussions between the Health Ministry and the Civil Aviation Ministry. The health of people in India and those traveling to India was the main concern for the ministries.

As the decision was already once rescinded in 2021 due to the breakout of the Omicron variant, the major airlines started preparing well in advance. According to DGCA, presently more than 60 airlines from 40 different countries are given the green light to operate 1,783 frequencies to and from India for the summer season. Also, six domestic airlines have been permitted to operate 1,466 international weekly flights to 43 destinations in 27 countries.

Many other changes have also been made by the Civil Aviation Ministry. Firstly, the government discontinued the “At-Risk” category of nations. Secondly, the government revised COVID-19 guidelines for international arrivals in India. And lastly, the conditions for airlines like keeping three vacant seats for medical emergencies and crew members having a PPE kit have also been removed.

The searches for affordable flight tickets to India have skyrocketed since the news initially came out. Many fan-favorite destinations like Goa, Delhi, Cochin, Thiruvananthapuram, and others are already expecting many visitors this holiday season.

After the resumption of international flights, IndiGo said that it is working towards gradually resuming its flights to 150 worldwide destinations by the end of next month. IndiGo’s Chief Commercial Officer Willy Boulter in an interview said that “We certainly have plans to open new destinations in the near future as well as pump up capacity on our existing routes as travel further opens up. Reaching economies of scale in such a dynamic environment where ATF and other fixed costs are constantly going up, becomes challenging.”

Foreign carriers have also made similar statements recently. Gulf carrier Emirates disclosed its plans of reinstating the pre-covid flight schedules starting on 1 April 2022. It was operating 170 flights to 9 destinations in a week before the ban on scheduled flights in 2020.

Virgin Atlantic, a British carrier, is presently offering its service from Mumbai. The company said that they will be starting a second daily service between Delhi and London. Sri Lankan Airlines runs 88 weekly flights to 9 destinations in India including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Chennai, and Bangalore.
