After the Emirates Airlines Codeshare partnership with Air India, Indigo also plans to utilize the same strategy, especially for the US and Canada flights with Turkish Airlines.
Indigo Airlines recently reported receiving authorization from the Ministry of Civil Aviation in which the air carrier is allowed to wet lease up to 2 aircraft to operate flights to the US and Canada.
In India, Indigo is popular as a budget carrier. According to recent news, the airline is planning to opt for codeshare connectivity to the US and Canada via the partnership program with Canada. This move by Indigo Airlines has come to the limelight a few days after Emirates Airlines’ codeshare with Tata Group-led airline Air India.

IndiGo has finally obtained consent from the Ministry of Civil Aviation which permits the airline to wet lease up to 2 airplanes to operate flights to Canada and the US, according to PTI reports. But IndiGo Airline has not officially confirmed the reports. Instead, the report says that the codeshare partnership program is under process.
Indigo Airlines states that the intent of the airline is to facilitate codeshare connectivity to the US and Canada via the partnership with Turkish Airlines. The reports also reveal that IndiGo has already started operating a wide-body Boeing 777 on the Delhi-Istanbul route in February 2023. IndiGo took a wide-body aircraft on wet lease from Turkish Airlines for the first time.
The leasing company leases aircraft along with the operating crew and engineers under the wet-lease agreement. But the wet lease agreement is usually for a short period. The main aim of taking planes on lease is to tackle supply constraints and ensure that airfares don’t skyrocket.
